Terroir & Geography

Luokeng (罗坑) is a town in [Qujiang](https://shaoguantea.com/glossary/qujiang/) District, [Shaoguan](https://shaoguantea.com/glossary/shaoguan/), Guangdong Province, and the heart of Shaoguan’s wild ancient tea tree region. It lies within the Guangdong Luokeng Crocodile Lizard National Nature Reserve, a protected area known for its pristine subtropical forest ecosystem. The reserve is named after the Chinese crocodile lizard (Shinisaurus crocodilurus), a living fossil species. Luokeng’s tea-growing areas range from 500 to 1,200 meters in elevation, with misty valleys, mineral-rich soils, and high biodiversity. It is home to over 40,000 wild ancient tea trees, making it the single most important terroir for Shaoguan’s premium teas. Notable producers include Xuehuayan (Snow Flower Rock) and Sankashui (Three Rivers). Luokeng is the source of the famous almond aroma teas and the Monkey-Picked Red series.
